The work explores the feeling of being in-between the two places the artist calls home, and the way her use of language has changed as a result. During the performance, a sonic landscape is crafted by deconstructing and recomposing a collection of sound and written material - field recordings, piano compositions and poetry. The work is informed by the oral and musical traditions that bind textiles and telling tales. Accompanying the performance are material works that can occupy the scenography, or be presented individually. The development of this performance was support by CBK Rotterdam. It has been performed at Shimmer, Rotterdam, NL and in collaboration with Textile Initiative at zone2source, Amsterdam, NL. Earlier sketches of the work can be heard here. It does so by extending processes - creating a protracted period of transformation that dissolves the expectation of an end result. This essay explores the use of exhaustion in transforming a discarded familial curtain that was destined for landfill, into a durational act of sabotage against the rigours of productive expectation. By transforming the curtain through a highly durational process of undoing and reordering the thread, it creates a drawn out interplay of body, cloth and time during which the traditional expectations of value and time fall away and alternative possibilities emerge. The pause is a form of sabotage, inspired by stories of factory workers who would gain a momentary reprieve from work by throwing parts into the assembly-line to halt the machines. The repetitions manifest in textile works that are exhausted through a process of undoing and redoing, becoming a garbled record of past and present hands, bodies and space. The process of undoing uncovers layers of time and untold stories, a time which is not quite free but only partially scripted. This partial script provides opportunity for reconsidering, rewriting and retelling that which we think we know about labour, productivity and value. Presented as a combination of performance and artefacts of the durational process, This Work of Body / This Body of Work asks you to actively stop – to occupy and be occupied by time.
